The Senior Years - Extending Horizons

The Senior stage of the school aims to build on the excellent foundations established in the Juniors and Infants. Our pupils have the opportunity to study a broad and balanced range of National Curriculum subjects. The ‘core’ subjects studied from Years 7 to 11 include: English (both Language and Literature) Mathematics, French, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, PSHE and PE and Games. In Year 7 all pupils study German and Latin and they choose which of these they wish to continue in Year 8. In Years 7 to 9, in addition to the core subjects and German or Latin, pupils also study Geography, History, Drama, Food Technology, Design Technology, ICT, Music and Religious Education. In Year 10 they begin to specialise according to their abilities and interests and opt to continue with ‘core’ subjects plus either 3 or 4 of the non-core subjects listed above, with an additional option choice of GCSE P.E. This results in most pupils sitting 10 GCSEs.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of regular assessment and monitoring through class tests and home work and pupils are formally examined annually in each subject. Pupils are set homework in all subjects form Year 7 onwards and the amount expected increases as the pupils progress through the school.

We set out to engage pupils and instil in them a thirst for learning. Each subject has its own dedicated teaching rooms and teachers employ an increasing range of multi-media resources, as well as more traditional teaching methods. There are numerous opportunities for pupils to extend their study beyond the class room, in the form of field trips, theatre and museum visits, sporting fixtures and competitions and many more. There is also a developing range of extension activities for qualifying pupils under our ‘Gifted and Talented’ programme. Pupils are taught most subjects in mixed ability classes, whereas for some subjects it may be advantageous to group pupils according to ability. This is increasingly so in GCSE classes. In all cases, pupils benefit from the fact that their classes remain small, giving teachers more time to work with pupils individually.

At Saint Nicholas every child is encouraged to give of their best and this applies to their academic, sporting and extra–curricular interests. Our high expectations extend to the pupils’ conduct and developing skills in social interaction and great emphasis is placed upon positive behaviour, with regular celebration of good work, effort and community spirit. We recognise that some pupils sometimes have concerns and worries that affect their well-being and have a caring pastoral system to offer support when needed, with additional peer support through our prefects in Year 11.
